MIT once again placed first overall out of around 20 schools in a virtual tournament this year on 3/20/21. Students competed virtually from all around the world – in their homes, at their studios and of course on campus, both indoors and outdoors. It was a great experience that brought the team together, and participants said they still felt all of the same tournament hype even though it was virtual.

The team had many old and new athletes from Black belts to Green belts that showed off the hard work they have been putting in during the pandemic. Matches were structured as teams of 3 with head-to-head matches between competitors of opposing schools. Each competitor performed their belt appropriate form to a panel of 5 judges and were scored on accuracy and performance. The player with the higher score won the match for their team and winning 2 out of 3 matches in a round advanced the team to the next round.

There were three different divisions based on skill level.  MIT entered teams into all three of these divisions and ended up winning all three!  In the A division (Black Belts only) MIT beat Northeastern to take Gold.  In the B division (Blue through Red belts) MIT beat Cornell to take Gold.  In the C division (White through Green belts) MIT would face a second MIT team to take Gold and Silver.
