Figure Skaters with medals

Kevin Shum and Shannen Wu (’21) who won gold and pewter respectively at the U.S. Collegiate Championships

The 2018 US Collegiate Figure Skating Championships was held at Adrian, Michigan by Adrian College from August 2nd to August 4th. Shannen earned a pewter medal (4th) while Kevin brought home the gold.

This summer, Shannen and Kevin spent hours training hard throughout their internships at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Microsoft, respectively, waking up early before work to drive to the rink and put in the many hours to prepare for a competition like collegiates. It’s many hours on the ice, as well as strength and conditioning training off the ice. They have to train year round — there isn’t really an ‘off-season,’ so it’s a constant sacrifice to stay in shape and stay competitive. The students feel really lucky to have ice time during the winter season to keep up that training with the rink right on campus, too.
